With Colombian pianist Juan Camacho Castro
In partnership with UIS Music

“Reciting” vs. “Speaking” Western Art Music. A few years ago, greatly influenced by research on Neapolitan schools of Partimento and Solfeggio, an international revival of “Historical Improvisation” exploded. Participants aim to be able to improvise preludes, toccatas, and even sonatas and fugues in recognizable styles of Western Art Music. In this concert, pianist and UIS Music faculty Juan Camacho Castro will share improvisation inspired by the Partimento tradition, along with pieces from the standard repertoire, and explore the musical tools we can steal from it to extemporize music, blurring the modern distinction between Composer and Performer.

Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombian pianist Juan Francisco Camacho Castro has given numerous solo and collaborative recitals in major cities in Colombia such as Bogotá, Medellín, Armenia, and Tunja. Mr. Castro is currently working toward his DMA in piano performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He earned his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at Missouri State University and his Bachelor’s in Piano Performance at the Conservatory of the National University in Colombia.
